Who utilizes RMHC services?

RMHC clients are from SLU, outside universities and private companies across the U.S. and Canada.  

Where is RMHC located?

The RMHC is located at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in Schwitalla Hall, Room M102. Enter the building at 3545 Vista Ave.  

When is RMHC open?

The RMHC is typically open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; special appointments can be made upon request. Holiday hours vary.

Project Planning and Submission

How do I submit samples?

SLU researchers can bring samples to the RMHC or call us to arrange pick-ups from a lab.

Researchers in the St. Louis area can bring samples to the RMHC or submit them via our online tool.

Submit a Sample

Can I submit clinical samples?

No. The RMHC only works with samples for research students.

Clinical samples can be submitted to the Histopathology Lab, which can be contacted at 314-977-7974, or the Clinical Electron Microscopy Lab, which can be contacted at 314-977-7854.

Check with RMHC staff for policies regarding IRB approval of research samples using human tissues. 

Can I scope my own work?

You may do your own scope work if you have been trained to use the microscopes. You will only be charged for scope time. 

Please contact the RMHC well in advance to schedule an appointment. 

How do I retrieve my images?

There are two ways to retrieve your images:

  • Upload images to the SLU Omero database.
    • Required file name format: YYY-MM-DD_PI_YourName_FolderName
    • All images will be uploaded to the folder name.
  • Upload images to the SLU server.
    • Microscope Computer: Upload images to the designated application at the end of each session.
    • Personal Computer: Remotely connect to the server using WinSCP or Filezilla. Contact RMHC staff for login details.

Please note: USB drives are not allowed on microscope computers. 

Should I embed my samples in paraffin, OCT or plastic?

Discuss your project with RMHC staff to determine which procedures will yield the specific information you need. We can provide appropriate fixative and assist with dissections to ensure the best possible outcome for your study.

Can I have multiple sections from different blocks cut onto a single slide?

RMHC's policy is to provide sections from one block per slide. Please discuss this with RMHC staff and plan submissions accordingly.

Results and Billing

How fast will I get results?

The timeline for results depends on the type of project.

Estimates

  • Standard Paraffin Projects: one to two weeks (20 samples or less)
  • Frozen Projects: one to two weeks
  • Plastic Projects: up to one to two months, depending on the number of samples
  • RNAscope Projects: within one to two weeks of receiving both slides and reagents (does not include extended imaging)
  • GeoMX ROI Selection: within one to two weeks of receiving both slides and reagents (does not include extended imaging)
What do you charge?

RMHC pricing is competitive with other facilities that offer microscopy services.

How will I be billed?

The RMHC sends invoices within one week of project completion, barring any issues in Workday. Internal clients receive invoices with necessary ISD information. External clients receive a SLU invoice with remittance information.
