A Message From the Program Director

On behalf of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, welcome!  

We put our patients and our people front and center — our core leadership value is that if we strive to care for our residents, our residents take better care of our patients.  

This commitment has an exponential impact. Residents like it here. According to a 2024-2025 ACGME survey, 99% of our residents would choose this program again. Many of our graduates — all of whom are committed to the same values — are now fellows, attendings, faculty, program directors, division directors, chairs and deans within this institution.  

As you explore our website and take the time to visit us personally, we hope you get the sense of our unique culture and outstanding leadership team. We provide a robust educational experience and take great pride in the quality of our graduates who go on and do fantastic things. If not at SLU, our graduates are currently fellows in many competitive programs, practicing primary care or hospitalist medicine, and many are faculty in medical schools across the country.

Program Highlights

The internal medicine residency offers a positive, supportive environment in which high-caliber trainees can thrive. The program is rooted in both the Jesuit tradition of caring for the whole person and the principle that adults learn by experience. Faculty emphasize two main values: prioritizing patient care and reflection, and committing to working as a team. 

Residents have a rich, diverse set of patient experiences, and they are granted progressive autonomy throughout training. Their hard work is matched by the faculty's dedicated effort to help them meet their career goals, evidenced by the many graduates who go on to join competitive fellowship programs or practice in academic and private settings across the country.
