Interventional Cardiology Fellowship
The SSM Health/Saint Louis University School of Medicine Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is designed for physicians who are board-certified in internal medicine and have completed at least three years of cardiology fellowship training.
A Message From the Program Director
Welcome to the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program.
This competitive training is for physicians who have already completed internal medicine and general cardiology training. It offers preparation for independent clinical practice and complex cardiology procedures.
Graduates are qualified to perform coronary and peripheral interventions and are board-eligible for the American Board of Internal Medicine Interventional Cardiology certifying examination.

Program Overview
The one-year, ACGME-accredited interventional cardiology fellowship offers a high volume of complex procedures and proficiency in advanced techniques. Fellow responsibilities include evaluating and caring for patients referred for cardiac catheterization and undergoing interventional procedures, as well as performing those procedures with the attending interventional cardiologists. The fellow will also be involved in and exposed to:
- Acute MI
- Cardiogenic shock cases
- Impella implantation and management
- Advanced chronic total occlusion lesion techniques
- Renal, iliac and lower-extremity angioplasty procedures
- Radial access to peripheral procedures and CO2 angiography

Current Fellow
Chinar G. Patel, M.D.
Fellowship: NYCHHC/South Brooklyn Health
Residency: Icahn School of Medicine at Mt. Sinai-Elmhurst
Medical school: Baroda Medical College
Chinar G. Patel was born in India and earned his medical degree from Baroda Medical College. In addition to developing his clinical skills, he actively pursued opportunities in research and leadership. After moving to the United States, he worked as a clinical researcher at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, contributing to multiple research projects involving transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
During his residency, Patel received the Resident of the Year award and was later selected to serve as chief resident. This experience strengthened his leadership skills and prepared him to serve as a chief fellow during his cardiovascular disease fellowship.
Patel's interest in interventional cardiology began during his clinical research work. His current interests include evidence-based coronary interventions and the use of mechanical circulatory system (MCS) devices in the care of patients with complex cardiovascular conditions.
Outside of medicine, Patel enjoys spending time with his child and traveling.
Apply
The fellowship program has one available position per year. Only U.S. citizens/permanent residents and international applicants with J-1 visas will be considered for training.
Minimum Requirements
- Board-certified in internal medicine
- At least three years of cardiology fellowship training
- Cardiac catheterization certification
- Coronary angiography certification
Interviews are held in September and October.
The program participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP).
